Lotte Giants pitcher Yoon Sung-bin, once considered a 'problem child', has returned to the 1st team mound. Drafted first overall by Lotte in 2017 with a 450 million won signing bonus, Yoon held immense promise. However, frequent injuries and underperformance led to him fading from fans' minds. He seized a new opportunity in 2025, showcasing impressive results in the Futures League. In 6 Futures League games, he pitched 21⅓ innings, compiling a 2-0 record with a 2.11 ERA. Notably, he struck out 40 batters, demonstrating a renewed pitching prowess. Many fans eagerly awaited his return to the 1st team, and finally, on May 20, 2025, he started against the LG Twins.
This 1st team appearance marked his return after 294 days, his last appearance being on July 30th of the previous year against the SSG Landers. It was also his first appearance at Sajik Stadium in a staggering 2472 days, since 2019. With high expectations, Yoon took the mound and initially wowed the crowd with a fastball topping out at 157 km/h. He struck out the first two batters, starting strong. However, he subsequently struggled with control, which proved disappointing. He walked batters and hit a batter, leading to a bases-loaded jam and significant runs allowed.
Yoon's persistent control problems were evident in this game. Of his 54 pitches, 30 were balls, highlighting his struggles to hit the strike zone. While his fastball speed remains enticing, precise control is crucial to effectively utilizing it. Lotte manager Kim Tae-hyeong cautioned Yoon about walks before the game, expressing his expectation for him to compete with batters. Unfortunately, his control ultimately hampered his performance.
Despite his disappointing 1st team return, Yoon showed clear improvement in the Futures League this season. His pitching balance improved, and his release point became more consistent, indicating technical advancements. He also demonstrated mental growth, committing to speaking through his actions and performance, consistently giving his all in each appearance. His return to fundamental training, guided by Futures League pitching coach Kim Sang-jin, appears to have paid off.
The Lotte organization invested significantly in Yoon's development, even sending him overseas for training. Under the guidance of coaches Kim Hyun-wook, Kim Sang-jin and others, he improved his lower body fundamentals and refined his arm swing. Yoon embraced these efforts, leading to his success in the Futures League. He also credits the continuous support of fans as a driving force.
Yoon's most significant challenge remains developing consistent control. This game served as a reminder that relying solely on speed isn't enough to succeed in professional baseball. Developing a mentality that allows him to confidently face batters head-on is also critical. He needs to maintain the momentum from the Futures League in the 1st team through persistent effort and close communication with the coaching staff to perfect his pitching mechanics.
Yoon considers baseball "everything" in his life and expresses his deep affection for the Lotte Giants, stating, "I feel like I am Lotte." Having returned to the 1st team after a long wait, he's determined to meet fans' expectations. Aiming to consistently throw fastballs down the middle, we eagerly anticipate his future contributions in this second act of his baseball career.
